STEINERT Australia takes to the streets

05 May 2016

Employees at STEINERT Australia will hit the streets on Wednesday 18 May 2016 - all in the name of better workplace health and productivity. This is the second year STEINERT Australia has participated in this event, in support of their Healthy Workplace policy.

“Walk the Block is all about kick starting a conversation about workplace health, and taking active steps towards a healthier, more productive workforce,” says Dr Rossiter, Executive Officer of Victoria Walks.

Australians are sedentary for 50-70% of waking hours, or 8-12 hours per day.[1] Prolonged sitting can lead to a higher mortality rate and increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.[2] Quite simply, the longer we sit, the worse our health becomes, even for people who are physically active. [3]

The simple solution is to get up, and get moving. Recent studies show that even a 2 minute walk per hour, can significantly lower a person’s risk of premature death by 33 per cent.[4] “Building walking into our daily routine is an easy way to increase our physical activity. Power walks, walking meetings or lunchtime walks can improve people’s moods and ability to handle stress at work,” says Dr Rossiter.

“There are significant economic and performance benefits from having a healthier workforce” explained Dr Rossiter. “Healthier workplaces increase innovation, improve staff morale, reduce staff turnover and absenteeism, enhance productivity and reduce sick leave”.

“It’s fantastic to see STEINERT Australia supporting this initiative and encouraging staff to become more active,” said Dr Rossiter.
